UN Rapporteur Francesca Albanese Highlights Gaza Atrocity in New Book

United Nations Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has published a new book titled *When the World Sleeps* (Polish translation *Kiedy świat śpi*). The work recounts personal stories from Gaza and the West Bank, documents alleged apartheid, occupation and genocide, and argues that the international community is increasingly passive. Albanese says the book faced pressure from pro‑Israel groups and financial sanctions that limited its availability in the United States. She also cites broader inequality, noting that “50,000 people in the world retain three times the wealth of half the global population.” The book includes findings from her earlier reports, such as the 2023 “Unchilding” study on the deprivation of children’s rights in the occupied territories. Through interviews and focus groups, Albanese portrays the daily suffering of Palestinians and critiques Western media and governments for their silence.

The publication aims to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and to press governments and institutions to act before the world ‘sleeps’ through further injustice.
