UNEP report: Clean air and climate action offer high economic returns

A new report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) asserts that integrated action on climate change and air pollution offers massive economic returns. The assessment, titled ‘Hidden Assets’, suggests that every dollar invested in these dual solutions can yield up to 15 dollars in economic benefits by improving health, productivity, and food security.

Globally, implementing 25 specific measures—including renewable energy, electric vehicles, and methane leak controls—could provide annual benefits equivalent to 2.8% of global GDP by 2035, rising to 11.4% by 2100. Even when excluding non-market welfare gains, the return is estimated at 4 dollars for every 1 dollar spent. Conversely, delaying action could cost the global economy over 1.5 trillion dollars annually.

Regional impacts vary significantly. In South Asia, which faces the highest economic burden from air pollution at 10% of its regional GDP, the economic return for these 25 solutions could reach 21 dollars for every 1 dollar invested. In Latin America and the Caribbean, the return is estimated at 9 dollars per dollar invested.
