United Nations report: Women and girls face rising violence in conflicts

A United Nations report on Women, Peace and Security reveals that women and girls accounted for one in four civilian deaths in armed conflicts in 2025, doubling their proportion from 2021. At least 25 women and girls are killed every day due to conflict and violence.

The report highlights that approximately 750 million women and girls now live within 50 kilometers of an active conflict, an increase of 40 million since 2024 and the highest level recorded since 1990. Additionally, UN-verified cases of conflict-related sexual violence nearly quadrupled between 2022 and 2025.

Despite their critical role in community survival—managing over 60 percent of grassroots emergency food distribution and medical triage in besieged areas—women remain largely excluded from formal political processes. In 2025, women comprised only 5 percent of negotiators in 57 global peace negotiations. UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous noted that while military spending increases, development assistance is declining, threatening the local female-led networks that serve as the operational backbone of civilian survival in war zones.
