United Nations warns of civilian casualties and malnutrition in Gaza
The United Nations has issued warnings regarding rising civilian casualties and a worsening malnutrition crisis in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that recent airstrikes in Gaza, including one in Deir al-Balah, damaged three UN warehouses. Additionally, clashes and raids in the West Bank, specifically in the Nablus governorate and East Jerusalem, have resulted in the deaths of civilians, including children.
A new UNICEF survey conducted between May 31 and June 15 highlights a severe nutritional crisis among Palestinian children. The study found that chronic malnutrition, or stunting, affects 12.2% of children under five in Gaza. Furthermore, 73% of children aged 6 to 23 months consumed unhealthy foods, while only 22.4% received the minimum acceptable diet. The UN has called for the protection of civilian infrastructure and the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, including fuel and medical supplies, to address these growing health and food security concerns.
