UN reports systematic mistreatment of Palestinians returning to Gaza

The United Nations Human Rights Office for the Occupied Palestinian Territory has expressed deep concern regarding reports of systematic mistreatment, violence, and property confiscation against Palestinians attempting to return to Gaza. These incidents are primarily occurring at the Kerem Abu Salem crossing.

Testimonies collected between July 7 and August 4, 2026, describe physical abuse, threats, and intrusive searches. Reports include the confiscation of essential items such as medication, identification documents, educational credentials, and cash. In one documented instance in July, 54 out of 92 returnees reported having their belongings seized.

The UN reports also highlight instances of humiliation and gender-based mistreatment. This includes reports of women being forced to undress during intrusive body searches while being filmed by security cameras. Additionally, the reports note the vulnerability of children, including cases where minors were separated from their families during the transit process.
