UN rights office calls for release of detained Indian protesters
The United Nations human rights office has urged Indian authorities to ensure the right to peaceful assembly is respected and to immediately release individuals reportedly detained during youth-led demonstrations. The protests were organized to demand electoral reforms, specifically calling for the resignation of the official heading India’s Election Commission.
Protesters have raised concerns regarding the revision of the national voter roll, which has reportedly removed tens of millions of names. While officials state this is to eliminate duplicates, political opponents allege the move is intended to benefit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
UN spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan stated that restrictions on peaceful protests must meet strict tests of necessity and proportionality, urging law enforcement to show utmost restraint and engage in meaningful dialogue to address the concerns raised by the movement.
