UN says Israeli attacks on Lebanon may constitute war crimes
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned that Israel’s attacks on southern Lebanon could constitute international crimes, including war crimes, after a two‑day visit. He cited mass displacement, the destruction of civilian infrastructure and the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health reports that since the attacks began on 2 March, 4,333 civilians have been killed and 12,236 injured. Among the dead are 135 doctors, with 410 more wounded. Despite a conditional cease‑fire agreed on 17 April, Israeli forces continue bombing and shelling the south, targeting homes, schools, hospitals, water and electricity networks, as well as religious sites.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun denounced the ongoing demolition of homes and heritage sites as a flagrant violation of international law and urged international action to halt the practice. Türk said the scale of displacement and the denial of return for thousands of residents could amount to international crimes under humanitarian law.
