UN Secretary-General and Indonesia call for Security Council reform

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Arrmanatha Nasir have called for comprehensive reform of the United Nations, specifically targeting the United Nations Security Council. During a meeting in Jakarta, both officials criticized the current use of veto power by permanent members, arguing that it often obstructs peace efforts and prevents the council from finding solutions to global conflicts.

Guterres noted that the current structure of the Security Council, established following World War II, no longer reflects modern geopolitical realities or the global distribution of power. He suggested that the current composition is no longer representative of the contemporary world.

Minister Nasir emphasized that reform is intended to make the UN more effective and responsive to current challenges rather than weakening the institution. He highlighted Indonesia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the Security Council for the 2029–2030 term as part of an effort to promote a more representative and results-oriented council. Nasir also reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to multilateralism and its support for a two-state solution regarding Palestinian statehood.
