UN Secretary-General calls for end to West Bank annexation

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on Israel to immediately halt the ‘uncontrolled annexation’ of the occupied West Bank. In a statement read to the UN Security Council by Ramiz Alkhabar, Guterres described the level of violence in the region as ‘deeply concerning’.

Guterres condemned the continuous expansion of Israeli settlements, stating that such actions are illegal, lack legal force, and undermine the Palestinian people's right to self-determination. He specifically highlighted increasing settler attacks, illegal demolitions of Palestinian property, and the rapid expansion of settlement reach as violations of international law.

The Secretary-General also called for an end to Palestinian attacks against Israelis and demanded accountability for all perpetrators. He further criticized the ‘dangerous provocations’ and ‘inflammatory rhetoric’ used by political officials on both sides of the conflict.

The West Bank is currently home to approximately three million Palestinians and over 500,000 Israelis living in settlements.
