UN Secretary-General condemns Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned Houthi attacks against civilian targets in Saudi Arabia, describing the actions as ‘totally unacceptable.’ Speaking from UN headquarters in New York, Guterres warned that escalating hostilities in Yemen and regional tensions are causing immense suffering and displacement for hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Guterres used the term ‘war El Niño’ to describe how localized conflicts can trigger global economic shocks, impacting energy markets, shipping routes, supply chains, and financial systems. He noted that fighting is intensifying around the Yemeni city of Taiz and other regions.

In a related development, the Yemeni Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed a European Parliament resolution calling for the European Union to designate the Houthi militia, including its political and military wings, as a terrorist organization. The Ministry stated this is a vital step toward protecting civilians and ensuring international maritime safety.

Separately, an IMF regional director noted that while geopolitical uncertainty remains a threat, the economic impact of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia has been limited thus far due to strong domestic demand and a robust public sector.
