UN Secretary-General candidates present reform and renewal visions
The United Nations General Assembly has held interactive dialogues with candidates seeking to succeed Antonio Guterres as Secretary-General. The current Secretary-General is set to step down at the end of the year after two five-year terms.
Ugandan diplomat Olara Otunnu, nominated by Uganda, emphasized the urgent need for UN reform to restore the organization's moral authority and address its perceived bureaucratic inefficiencies. Otunnu identified the proliferation of deadly global conflicts as a primary priority, pledging support to resolve crises in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, and Iran, as well as peace efforts between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Ecuadorian diplomat Ivonne Baki, nominated by Tonga, presented a vision centered on renewal rather than just reform. Baki described her approach as leadership focused on a 'north star' of peacebuilding and human dignity. Her platform includes modernizing the Security Council, resolving development debt, and protecting human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence.
