Abyei drone attack kills at least 153 people

A drone strike on the Amiet market in the disputed Abyei region killed at least 153 people on Monday, October 19, 2026. The attack, which targeted a fuel depot, triggered massive fires that hindered rescue efforts and caused the death toll to rise. Local authorities in Abyei have accused the Sudanese army of conducting the strike, while an anonymous Sudanese military official claimed the drones were targeting fuel tankers intended for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and the African Union. The UN expressed grave concern over the increasing use of drones in Sudan and the resulting civilian casualties, including women and children. South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Sudanese ambassador to protest the attack, noting that the victims included South Sudanese citizens, refugees, and members of the Ngok Dinka community.

This tragedy follows a wave of violence across Sudan. Reports indicate that separate drone strikes in West Kordofan and South Darfur killed dozens more people earlier in the week, bringing the total death toll from recent aerial attacks to over 300. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is currently treating more than 20 injured individuals at Ameth Bek hospital, with many in critical condition due to severe burns.
