UN Secretary-General election enters critical phase after failed votes

The selection process for the next United Nations Secretary-General has entered a critical phase after five informal votes by the Security Council failed to reach a consensus. While Rebeca Grynspan of Costa Rica currently holds a lead, an increase in negative votes during the most recent round suggests that the succession to António Guterres remains uncertain.

Under the current Greek presidency of the Security Council, the next major step is a sixth informal vote scheduled for Friday, October 16. This round is expected to utilize color-coded ballots, a method designed to identify whether a candidate faces opposition from one or more permanent members of the Council, though individual votes will remain anonymous.

To be recommended to the General Assembly, a candidate requires at least nine affirmative votes from the 15 Council members and must not receive a veto from any of the five permanent members: the United States, China, Russia, the United Kingdom, or France.
