Antonio Guterres calls for international law adherence at Istanbul conference
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emphasized that strict adherence to international law is the only path toward achieving lasting peace. In a video message delivered to the 9th Istanbul Mediation Conference, Guterres highlighted that global conflicts are becoming increasingly frequent, violent, and complex.
He noted that rising geopolitical tensions, uncontrolled technological developments, and the accelerating climate crisis are contributing to a climate of impunity that intensifies human suffering. Guterres advocated for addressing the root causes of conflicts through dialogue, diplomacy, confidence-building measures, and mediation to reach ceasefires and broader political settlements.
The conference, held under the theme ‘Partnerships for Peace and New Perspectives: Mediation in a Changing World,’ was hosted by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. It brought together approximately 200 high-level officials, diplomats, and experts, including representatives from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
