António Guterres calls for regional de-escalation during Egypt visit

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres concluded a three-day official visit to Egypt focused on addressing escalating regional crises. During his stay in Cairo, Guterres emphasized the need to prevent the widening of regional wars, protect civilians, and create political space for diplomacy and peace.

Addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Guterres called for the immediate suspension of Israeli restrictions on aid entry and the removal of obstacles to implementing the Comprehensive Plan for an End to the Conflict in Gaza. He also advocated for a two-state solution and the end of the Israeli occupation.

In meetings with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy, discussions covered the situations in Sudan, Libya, Lebanon, and Syria. Fahmy stressed the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803 and maintaining support for UNRWA. The leaders also addressed maritime security, with Guterres calling for the restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb.

Guterres also highlighted Egypt's strategic role in mediating diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran to contain instability in the Middle East.
