UN Secretary-General Guterres backs Iraq's stance after Iran‑backed attacks on Saudi Arabia

UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres said the organization fully supports Iraq’s determination not to be instrumentalised by anyone after Iran‑backed militias launched attacks on Saudi Arabia from Iraqi territory. He highlighted Iraq’s claim that the state must retain a monopoly on the use of force within its borders.

Guterres also referenced US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a historic Hamas disarmament and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, urging both sides to implement the agreement without doubt. In addition, he warned that new fossil‑fuel projects increase future heat‑wave risks and called for heat‑extreme protection to be built into city, school and hospital planning.
