UN Secretary-General Guterres meets Pakistan military chief Asim Munir
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Pakistan’s military chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, in Rawalpindi to discuss regional security and international peace. During the meeting, Guterres acknowledged Pakistan’s contributions to UN peacekeeping missions and its sacrifices in counterterrorism efforts.
Discussions between the two leaders covered several critical regional issues, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, the Indus Waters Treaty, and terrorism originating from Afghanistan. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric indicated that the Secretary-General’s discussions with Pakistani interlocutors also addressed the situation surrounding former Prime Minister Imran Khan, specifically his detention and health condition.
The high-profile meeting occurred amid domestic political tension, as supporters of Khan organized marches toward Islamabad demanding his release. Guterres also held meetings with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari during his visit to the country.
