On 30 July 2026 the United Nations Security Council held its first informal, non‑binding straw poll to gauge support for candidates to succeed Secretary‑General António Guterres, whose term ends at the close of 2026. Former Costa Rican Vice‑President Rebeca Grynspan received ten “encourage” votes, one “discourage” vote and four “no opinion” votes, making her the early frontrunner. Former Guyanese Foreign Minister Carolyn Rodrigues‑Birkett came second with nine encourage votes, two discourage votes and four neutral votes. Argentine International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi placed third with seven encourage votes, two discourage votes and six neutral votes. Four other candidates – former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, former Ecuadorian Foreign Minister María Fernanda Espinosa, former Senegalese President Macky Sall and Ugandan diplomat Olara Otunnu – also remain in the race.

The poll is a confidential step in a process that requires a candidate to obtain at least nine of the 15 Council votes and avoid a veto from any of the five permanent members (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States). The Council’s recommendation is then needed before the General Assembly can appoint the new Secretary‑General. Observers note that Grynspan’s lead could make her the first woman to head the UN in its 80‑year history, and the selection is being watched for its implications for UN reform and the organization’s ability to address global conflicts and financial challenges.
