António Guterres warns of Middle East escalation

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned against a major military escalation between Iran and the United States or Persian Gulf nations, stating that the consequences would be unimaginable and extend far beyond the region.

Speaking in Cairo alongside Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, Guterres called for maximum restraint and diplomatic solutions to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control. He emphasized the necessity of restoring navigational rights and freedoms in critical maritime corridors, specifically the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Regarding the conflict in Gaza, Guterres urged the lifting of Israeli restrictions on humanitarian assistance and the removal of obstacles to implementing the UN Security Council-endorsed plan to end the conflict. He also expressed deep alarm over Israeli actions in the occupied West Bank, citing expanding settlements, evictions, and violence.
