UN Security Council to Hold Straw Poll for New Secretary‑General
The United Nations Security Council will conduct an initial informal closed‑door “straw poll” on Thursday, July 28, to gauge support for the seven candidates vying to become the next Secretary‑General of the United Nations. The candidates are Rafael Grossi (Argentina), former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, former Costa Rican vice‑president Rebeca Grynspan, former Ecuadorian foreign minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa, former Guyanese foreign minister Carolyn Rodrigues‑Birkett, former Senegalese president Macky Sall and Ugandan diplomat Olara Otunnu. The poll is non‑binding; a candidate must obtain the backing of at least nine of the 15 Council members and avoid a veto from any of the five permanent members (the United States, Russia, China, France and the United Kingdom). There is no clear front‑runner and the process may require several rounds, potentially extending through the summer and concluding in late September or early October. The Council’s recommendation will be forwarded to the 193‑member UN General Assembly for final approval. The current Security Council president is the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The selection reflects the UN’s regional rotation principle, with most candidates coming from the Americas and a gender balance of four women and three men. Bachelet has said the world must be “ready” for a woman to hold the post.
