UN Secretary‑General Guterres urges AI firms to disclose data‑center climate impact

At the London Climate Action Week forum, UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres called on leading artificial‑intelligence companies to publish transparent data on the carbon emissions, water use and land footprint of their data‑center operations. He announced a new environmental‑transparency initiative that will require AI firms to measure and disclose these impacts, arguing that hidden costs must end so communities are not burdened.

Guterres also warned of the broader energy crisis, urging intensified global action to curb methane emissions and calling for an end to new investments in fossil‑fuel‑based energy systems, linking the climate emergency to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. He stressed the need for rapid measures to keep global temperature rise within the 1.5 °C limit set by the Paris Agreement.
