UN Secretary‑General Guterres urges ocean protection on World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day was marked on June 8 with United Nations officials stressing the critical role of the oceans, which cover three‑quarters of the planet, contain 97 % of its water and regulate climate, support biodiversity and feed billions. Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres said, “the ocean reminds us that we are all interconnected,” and called for ambitious, science‑based stewardship.

In San Marino, the Captains Regent issued a statement linking humanity to the sea, highlighting threats from warming waters, pollution, over‑fishing and eutrophication. They urged greater scientific research, international cooperation and everyday actions such as reducing single‑use plastics and adopting sustainable consumption, emphasizing that institutions, businesses and citizens all share responsibility for protecting the marine environment.
