UN Security Council addresses Syria's fragile security and massive humanitarian crisis

The United Nations Security Council convened to examine Syria’s deteriorating security situation, especially in the south, where conditions remain vulnerable following recent Israeli strikes. Delegates also discussed a multinational oil‑pipeline project intended to mitigate the impact of the closed Strait of Hormuz.

The meeting highlighted the scale of the humanitarian emergency, with the UN estimating that about 15.6 million people – roughly two‑thirds of Syria’s population – require assistance and 5.5 million remain internally displaced. The Secretary‑General announced his first visit to Damascus later this week.

Representatives noted political transition milestones, such as the formation of a new People's Assembly and a Supreme Constitutional Court, while urging that the Assembly reflect Syria’s societal diversity. Greece’s permanent UN envoy, Ambassador Angeliki Barta, called for sustained international support for reconstruction, emphasized the need to locate missing persons, and stressed accountability for past violence in Suwayda and the bombing of a church in Damascus.
