UN Security Council addresses Syria's political transition and security
During a UN Security Council briefing on Syria, Deputy Special Envoy Claudio Cordone emphasized that economic recovery is essential for the country's political transition and stability. He called on international partners to convert political support into tangible funding, technical assistance, and specific projects, noting that success will be measured by improvements in daily life.
Security concerns were highlighted, including ongoing Israeli military activities in southern Syria and the need to respect the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. Cordone also stressed that a sustainable solution for Sweida requires dialogue among Syrians.
Ambassador Aglaia Baltas, representing Greece, focused on the protection of religious and ethnic communities and the importance of education. She warned against a ‘lost generation of children’ and called for the rapid adoption of plans to prevent violations against minors. Baltas noted that recent violence in Sukaylabiyah and Homs serves as a reminder of fragile social cohesion and mentioned reports of renewed violence affecting the Orthodox Christian community.
