UN Security Council elected members call for institutional reform

The ten elected members of the United Nations Security Council, known as the E10, are calling for a profound reform of the body’s working methods to increase transparency, inclusivity, and accountability. In a statement released in New York, the group—which includes the Democratic Republic of the Congo—advocated for greater participation of elected members in drafting texts and more equitable access to Council documentation.

Vietnam has also emphasized the urgency of these reforms, noting that improving working methods is essential to making the Council more representative and capable of responding to current international crises. Key areas for improvement include the appointment of presidents for subsidiary organs and enhancing dialogue during the selection process for the UN Secretary-General.

Beyond procedural changes, the E10 reaffirmed support for a broader global reform of the Security Council to better reflect modern geopolitical realities, addressing long-standing calls for increased representation from regions such as Africa.
