UN Security Council extends Colombia verification mission mandate

The United Nations Security Council has unanimously approved a resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia until October 31, 2027. The decision, adopted by all 15 member states, follows a proposal by the administration of President Abelardo de la Espriella to narrow the mission's scope.

Under the new mandate, the mission will focus on verifying the reintegration of former FARC combatants and ensuring security guarantees for those who have laid down their arms. Notably, the resolution removes international oversight of the Integral Rural Reform, a key component of the 2016 peace agreement. The Colombian government argues that rural reform is a structural national policy that should be led by domestic institutions rather than international observers.

The shift has drawn mixed reactions. Representatives from the United Kingdom and the United States expressed support for the decision, with the U.S. noting that it encourages national leadership. However, Russia and various opposition figures in Colombia raised concerns that withdrawing international monitoring from rural reform could impact land rights and commitments to peasant communities.
