United Nations begins third round of voting for next Secretary-General

The United Nations Security Council has completed its third round of informal voting to select the next Secretary-General. The selection process aims to find a successor to António Guterres, whose second five-year term concludes on December 31, 2026. The new leader is expected to assume office on January 1, 2027.

Currently, eight candidates are in the running, including Rebeca Grynspan, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Rafael Grossi, Michelle Bachelet, Macky Sall, María Espinosa Garcés, Olara Otunnu, and Ivonne A-Baki. While the voting results are conducted anonymously and are not made public, the field of candidates remains unchanged since the second round.

The leadership transition occurs as Guterres warns of a deteriorating global state characterized by multiplying conflicts and geopolitical paralysis within the Security Council. He has called for increased investment in peace, diplomacy, and mediation to address rising violence and economic instability.

A global public opinion study conducted by GeoPoll for the UN Foundation indicates that while 84% of respondents view the UN as necessary, 52% believe the organization is struggling to deliver results. The study highlights a global desire for an outward-facing leader, with public opinion split between a diplomat, a crisis manager, and a moral voice.
