UN Special Rapporteur Andrea Bolaños Criticizes Mexico's Human Rights Commission over Ayotzinapa Case

United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Andrea Bolaños Vargas, publicly condemned the Mexican National Human Rights Commission's (CNDH) recommendation 208VG/2026. She called for an immediate end to any campaign that seeks to discredit civil groups assisting the families of the 43 students who disappeared in Iguala.

Bolaños warned that the recommendation attempts to erode the credibility of organizations that have contributed technical and forensic work through the Interdisciplinary Group of Independent Experts, the Commission for Truth, and the Special Unit of the Attorney General's Office. She reminded Mexico of its international obligations to safeguard defenders of fundamental rights and criticized the CNDH for introducing ideological language that attacks independent expertise.
