UN Special Rapporteur visits Mozambique to assess climate change impacts
Elisa Morgera, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights and climate change, has begun a mission to Mozambique to assess how climate change impacts human rights and evaluate the country’s responses. The visit, which runs until October 2, involves meetings with government officials, civil society, academics, UN agencies, the private sector, and directly affected communities.
Morgera will examine the role of international financing, technical assistance, and capacity-building in supporting the resilience of vulnerable populations. Mozambique is highly susceptible to climate-related disasters; during the most recent rainy season, floods and tropical cyclones resulted in 311 deaths and affected approximately 1.7 million people.
Preliminary findings and recommendations are scheduled to be presented at a press conference in Maputo on October 2. A final report is expected to be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2027.
