UN Tourism reports 0.4% growth in global tourism for H1 2026
International tourism grew by 0.4% in the first half of 2026, with approximately 690 million arrivals. According to the latest World Tourism Barometer from UN Tourism, this represents an increase of 3 million travelers compared to the same period in 2025.
Despite the overall growth, UN Tourism has revised its full-year growth forecast downward to between 1% and 2%, from the previously anticipated 3% to 4%. This adjustment comes as the sector faces pressures from geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East, rising oil prices, and persistent inflation.
Regional performance varied significantly. Europe saw a 3% increase in arrivals, led by strong growth in Moldova, Greece, and Ireland. However, Western Europe experienced a 1% decline, partly attributed to heatwaves in June. The Middle East saw a sharp 22% decrease in arrivals due to regional conflict. Southeast Asia also saw declines, with arrivals dropping by 1% in June due to geopolitical tensions and increased travel costs. In Oceania, some destinations saw a 6% drop following the impact of Typhoon Sinlaku.
