UN Tourism Secretary-General visits Mexico to promote sustainable tourism

Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais, the Secretary-General of UN Tourism, participated in high-level meetings in Mexico to discuss the future of the tourism sector. During the 71st Ordinary Assembly of the Association of Secretaries of Tourism of Mexico (ASETUR) in Mexico City, officials addressed challenges and opportunities for making the industry more competitive and sustainable.

In Tamaulipas, Tourism Secretary Benjamín Hernández Rodríguez emphasized the state's commitment to international projection and community development through tourism.

Additionally, Al Nowais visited Omitlán de Juárez in the state of Hidalgo. The visit focused on the region's successful rural and community tourism model, which earned the ‘Best Tourism Villages’ distinction from UN Tourism in 2023. Local officials highlighted how the integration of cultural traditions, gastronomy, and natural heritage serves as a tool for economic development and the preservation of indigenous identity.
