UN urges global data‑center firms to disclose carbon impact and shift to renewable power by 2030

The United Nations has called on major technology companies to measure and publicly report the carbon emissions of their data‑center operations. Secretary‑General António Guterres urged firms to adopt standardized procedures for tracking environmental impact, including the large electricity and water consumption associated with server farms. The UN seeks a commitment that all data centres worldwide run on 100 % renewable energy by 2030, a change that would require significant investment and revised power‑supply contracts. The push comes amid concerns that digital infrastructure could consume a third of national electricity supplies in key connectivity hubs and use water volumes comparable to those of entire central European nations.
