UN warns of South Sudan crisis as Palestinian President decries Israeli escalation

The United Nations Human Rights Commission for South Sudan has issued a warning regarding the deteriorating situation in the country. Following its 14th visit, Commission Chair Yasmin Sooka reported persistent violence, displacement, and insecurity. The commission highlighted a failure by political and security authorities to protect civilians, noting that women and girls face serious violations and limited access to basic services.

Commissioner Carlos Castresana Fernandez emphasized the issue of impunity, stating that perpetrators of serious violations often face no accountability due to weak judicial institutions. Additionally, there has been minimal implementation of recommendations regarding systemic corruption.

In the Palestinian territories, President Mahmoud Abbas warned of a dangerous escalation by Israeli authorities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Abbas cited settlement expansion, land seizures, home demolitions, and military checkpoints as actions intended to weaken Palestinian resilience and encourage emigration. He also noted that Israel is withholding over $6 billion in Palestinian funds.

Regarding Gaza, Abbas called for the immediate implementation of a plan involving a ceasefire and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces.
