UN warns of total repression and state capture in Nicaragua

The United Nations Human Rights Office has issued a report describing a “total repression” in Nicaragua, noting that no sector of society remains unaffected by the deterioration of fundamental freedoms. The report, covering the period from June 2025 to June 2026, details the systematic concentration of power within the executive branch under the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.

UN experts highlighted the complete disappearance of political pluralism. Evidence cited includes the National Assembly recording zero dissenting votes across 185 sessions and the ruling party maintaining control over all 153 municipalities. The report also documents the forced closure of 56 media outlets and the arbitrary detention of 243 individuals.

High Commissioner Volker Türk warned of the “capture of the state,” noting that legal reforms have stripped state entities of independence. This environment has led to the widespread closure of civic space, where expressing dissent can result in job loss, surveillance, criminal prosecution, asset confiscation, or forced exile.
