UN warns Yemen faces risk of large-scale war escalation

The United Nations has issued urgent warnings that Yemen is facing its most significant risk of returning to a large-scale war since the 2022 truce. UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg reported an unprecedented escalation in armed confrontations between Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, and the internationally recognized government, supported by Saudi Arabia.

Fighting has intensified across multiple fronts, including Marib, Hadramaut, and Mocha. Recent Houthi offensives have resulted in civilian casualties and damage to critical infrastructure, such as fuel storage facilities and hospital complexes. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities to prevent a total collapse of security.

Beyond domestic fighting, the UN warned that Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden increase the risk of a broader regional conflict. Simultaneously, humanitarian concerns are mounting; officials report that over half of Yemen's population suffers from acute food insecurity, with nearly 6 million people approaching famine-like conditions.
