UN Women expert calls for shared caregiving responsibility at UAEMex

Alejandra d'Hyver de las Deses Breña, economic empowerment project coordinator for UN Women Mexico, addressed the importance of shared responsibility in caregiving during a colloquium at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEMex).

During her lecture, “Local Care Agenda: Towards a Co-responsible Society,” d'Hyver emphasized that achieving a co-responsible society requires challenging gender stereotypes that have historically led to an unequal distribution of care tasks. She noted that caregiving must account for the social and territorial conditions of those performing the work, as well as the rights of caregivers to rest, autonomy, health, and personal development.

Norma Baca Tavira, Secretary of Substantive Equality and Care at UAEMex, added that prioritizing life means recognizing the value of daily tasks that sustain health, nutrition, and social bonds. The event was organized by the university's Secretariat of Substantive Equality and Care to reflect on how caregiving contributes to social well-being and the common good.
