Migrant children in U.S. face legal crisis due to funding cuts

Between 20,000 and 26,000 unaccompanied migrant children in the United States are facing a legal crisis following the expiration of federal contracts for 100 civil organizations on July 31. The Americans for Immigrants Justice (AI Justice) group reported that the Trump administration's withdrawal of public funds has severely impacted legal defense efforts. AI Justice specifically noted a 40% reduction in its operating budget, forcing the organization to downsize its staff.

Data from the Vera Institute of Justice indicates that 63% of affected minors—approximately 425,000 individuals including those who arrived accompanied—did not have legal representation in 2025. Additionally, an analysis by the Brookings Institute shows that 145,000 U.S. citizen children have lost at least one parent due to migration-related arrests since the current administration began, with 22,000 children losing both parents.
