Unai Simón wins Yashin Trophy at Ballon d'Or gala

Athletic Club and Spanish national team goalkeeper Unai Simón has been awarded the Yashin Trophy, recognizing him as the best goalkeeper of the season. During the ceremony held at the London Palladium, Simón delivered an emotional speech that highlighted his personal values and the mentors who shaped him.

Simón paid tribute to the late Koldo Asua, a former Athletic Club official who served in the club's player assistance department. Simón noted that Asua taught him that football transcends individual titles and victories, emphasizing the importance of being remembered as a good person and teammate.

In a rare public appearance regarding his private life, Simón also dedicated words to his girlfriend, describing her as an “oasis of tranquility” amidst the chaos of professional football. Former Athletic Club player Iker Muniain also offered praise for Simón’s achievement, noting that having a player of his caliber is a luxury for the club.
