Spain's Unai Simón breaks World Cup shutout record with 519 minutes

Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón set a new FIFA World Cup record by going 519 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal. The streak, achieved during Spain’s 3‑0 victory over Austria in the 2026 tournament, surpassed the previous mark of 517 minutes held by Italy’s Walter Zenga since 1990.

Simón credited the achievement to the collective defensive effort of the Spanish team and highlighted the quality of the goalkeeper trio comprising himself, David Raya and Joan García, saying any of them could have reached the record. He stressed that the "record talks better about the team than about me" and noted that Spain had faced only three shots on target in the competition so far.

Looking ahead, Simón discussed Spain’s upcoming round‑of‑16 clash with Portugal, warning that Cristiano Ronaldo remains a threat despite not being in his peak form. He underscored the need to keep a clean sheet and to control possession to limit Portugal’s chances.
