UNAIDS, China, and South Africa partner to boost African pharmaceutical production

UNAIDS has announced a strategic alliance between South Africa and China to boost the local production of medicines, diagnostics, and health technologies in Southern Africa. The initiative, involving the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Global Health Innovation Institute (GHI), aims to reduce the continent's dependence on external medical suppliers and enhance health sovereignty, particularly regarding HIV treatments.

The project focuses on high-level exchange between governments and manufacturers in industrial hubs such as Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town to facilitate technology transfer and attract investment. Chinese pharmaceutical companies are expected to provide technical leadership to scale local production capacities.

In a separate development regarding regional development, Mozambique is seeking to increase domestic food production by leveraging Brazilian expertise. During the Maputo International Trade Fair (FACIM), Mozambican leadership expressed interest in collaborating with the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) to adopt technologies and training to modernize the agricultural sector and reduce reliance on food imports.
