UNAM experts explain health risks following vacations

Medical experts from UNAM clarify that while vacations do not directly cause illness, several factors associated with travel can increase susceptibility to health issues. Common triggers include changes in daily habits, such as altered sleep patterns, different dietary routines, and reduced physical activity.

Travel environments like airports, planes, and hotels increase exposure to respiratory viruses and other infectious agents. Additionally, factors such as constant air conditioning, temperature fluctuations, sun exposure, and dehydration can impact well-being. Changes in eating schedules may lead to digestive disorders, while the incubation periods of certain infections often result in symptoms appearing shortly after returning home.

Returning to routine can also trigger anxiety, fatigue, and stress, which may exacerbate conditions like gastritis, colitis, allergies, or asthma. To mitigate these risks, specialists recommend maintaining proper hydration, ensuring adequate rest, frequent handwashing, and consuming well-cooked foods.
