UNAM researcher warns of long-term impact of adolescent mental health disorders

Tania Rocha Sánchez, a researcher at the UNAM Faculty of Psychology, warns that untreated mental health disorders during adolescence can have lasting consequences into adulthood, impacting physical and mental well-being and limiting life prospects.

In Mexico and globally, approximately one in seven people aged 10 to 19 faces mental health challenges. Depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders are leading causes of disability among adolescents, while suicide remains the third leading cause of death for those aged 15 to 29.

During a conference regarding mental health challenges for LGBTIQ+ youth, Rocha Sánchez noted that certain groups face heightened vulnerability due to prejudice and misinformation. LGBTIQ+ youth are nearly three times more likely to experience anxiety, depression, stress, or suicidal ideation, and are approximately twice as likely to consume alcohol and drugs compared to their heterosexual peers.
