UNBC researcher uses driving simulator to improve wildfire evacuations
Alireza Noory, a PhD candidate at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), is conducting a study to improve wildfire evacuation planning in northern British Columbia. The research focuses on understanding local driving behavior to create more realistic evacuation forecasts, moving away from general assumptions used in current models.
Noory has developed a driving simulator called UNBCSIM, which recreates a section of Highway 97 North through Prince George. Participants use the simulator to navigate two distinct scenarios: a typical day and a wildfire evacuation. The simulator tracks driver responses, including acceleration, braking, and speed changes.
The data collected will be used to calibrate a computerized traffic model for Prince George. This model aims to assist city officials and emergency planners in analyzing traffic movement during emergencies and testing various evacuation strategies in advance.
