UNC defensive line remains a core strength for Tar Heels
The University of North Carolina defensive line remains a core strength for the Tar Heels, providing stability despite fluctuations in other areas of the team. The unit previously ranked 20th nationally in sacks and 23rd in rushing yards allowed per attempt.
Key returning players include Melkart Abou-Jaoude, a standout pass rusher who led the ACC with 10.5 sacks last season. The interior defense will also benefit from the return of Leroy Jackson and Isaiah Johnson.
To bolster the unit, the team has added talent through transfers, including Jaylen Harvey from Penn State and Donovan Hoilette from the University of Richmond. While the depth and speed on the edge are viewed as significant assets, concerns remain regarding roster depth and the physical toll the position takes on athletes over the course of a season.
