UNC field hockey enters 2026 season as ACC preseason No. 1

UNC field hockey ACC preseason No. 1 college athletics Tar Heels ACC/Big Ten Challenge

The University of North Carolina field hockey team is beginning its 53rd season as the ACC preseason No. 1 team. Head coach Erin Matson leads a roster that features 14 returning players and eight newcomers, including seven freshmen and one transfer.

Newly elected captains Charly Bruder and Grace Pottebaum provide veteran leadership for the squad. Bruder, a three-time All-American, enters her fourth season following a 2024 campaign where she led the nation with 27 goals. The team faces the challenge of replacing 67% of its scoring from the 2025 season.

The Tar Heels will open their season with the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, facing #14 Michigan on August 28 and #11 Iowa on August 30. The program is currently pursuing its 10th consecutive ACC Tournament title and its 12th national championship.
