UNC Police ends automatic Flock camera data-sharing

The University of North Carolina (UNC) Police Department has decided to disable the automatic data-sharing feature of its Flock Safety camera system. UNC Police Chief Brian James announced that while the department will continue to use the technology, it will no longer automatically share data with other North Carolina law enforcement agencies.

Chief James cited concerns regarding potential misuse and rhetoric surrounding the technology as the primary reasons for the decision. He noted that while investigators and supervisors still have access to the cameras for departmental needs, other agencies must now contact UNC directly to request information. James clarified that the university has not shared data with federal agencies and has not participated in immigration and customs enforcement activities on campus.
