COP17 in Mongolia focuses on securing land restoration finance

The 17th session of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP17) has entered its final, decisive week in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. A primary focus of the negotiations is securing massive financial resources to combat land degradation and drought. While US$ 1.3 billion in new resources has been announced, UN experts note a significant annual funding gap of approximately US$ 278 billion.

A major economic highlight is the launch of the Rangelands Flagship Initiative, a partnership between the Mongolian government and the UNCCD. This initiative manages a portfolio of 45 projects valued at US$ 1.2 billion aimed at restoring and sustainably managing global rangeland ecosystems. Additionally, the Mongolian government has secured commitments for further funding, including a letter of intent with the European Investment Bank for up to 200 million euros and a program with the World Bank to mobilize 100 million dollars.

On the diplomatic front, Indian Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav has engaged in high-level bilateral meetings with representatives from Bhutan and Sri Lanka to discuss agroforestry, biodiversity, and wildlife conservation. Meanwhile, technological advancements are being presented, such as LONGi’s proposal to use photovoltaic technology to enhance food security through artificial starch synthesis. The summit continues through August 28, emphasizing the theme ‘Restoring Land, Restoring Hope’.
