Mongolia hosts COP17 UN desertification summit in Ulaanbaatar

The 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) has convened in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, under the theme ‘Restoring Land, Restoring Hope’. The summit aims to transition from global commitments to measurable implementation regarding land degradation, drought, and desertification.

Key developments include the signing of the Ulaanbaatar Declaration, where approximately 30 local and regional leaders committed to sustainable land management and drought resilience. However, the summit faces significant challenges. Indigenous peoples, pastoralists, and civil society groups have protested, demanding more meaningful participation in official negotiations and the reinstatement of deferred policy items such as gender, migration, and rangelands.

Economic and environmental stakes are high. The UN reports that land degradation causes nearly $900 billion in annual losses, and the UNCCD estimates that $2.6 trillion is required by 2030 to address the crisis. In Mongolia, 80% of the territory is already affected by soil degradation. Additionally, a coalition of 400 civil society organizations has called on states to recognize land restoration as a critical tool for peacebuilding and conflict prevention.
