Understanding post-vacation blues and routine adjustment

The phenomenon informally known as ‘post-vacation blues’ describes the emotional and physical difficulties individuals face when transitioning from holiday routines back to daily responsibilities. While not a formal psychiatric diagnosis, the feeling is a real experience for many people as they attempt to readjust to regular rhythms.

Symptoms can include a lack of motivation, nervousness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of sadness or emptiness. The sudden shift from late waking hours and social freedom to early alarms, work deadlines, and household chores creates a sharp contrast that can disrupt sleep patterns and cause a sense of being overwhelmed.

To mitigate these effects, it is suggested that individuals avoid returning from trips late on a Sunday evening. Whenever possible, leaving at least one day between returning from a vacation and returning to work can help facilitate a smoother transition.
