Puppy biting behavior linked to developmental stages

Puppy biting and sudden behavioral changes, often described as becoming a ‘land shark,’ are frequently driven by developmental factors rather than aggression or a desire to dominate. Because puppies are still developing the cognitive and emotional skills necessary to navigate their environment, their ability to regulate emotions and control impulses is extremely limited.

As puppies explore the world using their mouths, behaviors such as biting clothing, chasing feet, or grabbing hands can intensify when they become excited, tired, or overstimulated. Understanding the context of these actions—distinguishing between playful engagement and genuine aggression—is essential for guardians to respond effectively to these developmental stages.
